Etcham was once a prosperous town with a bright future, however, with more and more jobs going overseas and shipping being handled by aircraft; the town has slowly stagnated. Recently, though, the town has seen an upswing in commuters settling with the town’s convenient location on the Newcastle to London line, as well as a seasonal ferry that travels across the North Sea. Local unemployment, however, is large and a sense of desperation permeates the air.
The town, however, isn’t completely dead; a few clubs can be found along with pubs and bars. Despite the closure of the docks twenty years ago, the natural gas refineries along the estuary still run and various small businesses survive. Knife crime is prevalent along with the gang culture that permeates the country, meanwhile, organised crime runs a steady stream of narcotics and vice through the abandoned harbour haunted by the occasional derelict in search of a ‘better life’.
To the west of the town are a few desperate small towns, moorland and the railway line to London.
